V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

Definition: guidance, support, approval, or protection, especially by an organization

Synonyms: patronage, sponsorship, support, protection, supervision, authority, aegis

Tips: Auspices is usually used in the form, "under the auspices of." It is a more sophisticated way of saying "under the protection of," "under the guidance of," or "under the support of." It is similar to tutelage except that "under her tutelage" refers more to teaching or mentoring than "under the auspices of." In the singular, auspice, it can mean "a sign or omen interpreted by an augur." Be careful not to confuse auspices with its homonym auspicious.

Usage Examples:

The fire department demonstration was held under the auspices of the city council committee on public safety. (sponsorship, supervision)

Under the auspices of their local relief agencies, many volunteers worked to help flood victims. (support, patronage, authority)

She joined the soccer team under the auspices of her father's watchful eye. (protection, supervision)

The new building that houses the humane society was built under the auspices of the wealthy animal lover's generous donation. (patronage, sponsorship)
