Definition: quarrelsome and ill-natured

Synonyms: cranky, bad-tempered, irritable, irascible, argumentative, belligerent, grouchy

Antonyms: good natured, cheerful, friendly

Tips: Cantankerous is believed to be an alteration of raucous. Notice the similarity in sound between raucous and cantankerous. Someone who is cantankerous is causing a raucous with his or her bad temper, crankiness, and/or belligerent attitude. Use cantankerous to describe someone who is difficult to get along with.

Usage Examples:

As a waiter, I had the unfortunate experience of serving many cantankerous customers. (irritable, ill-natured)
