V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

Definition: unable to be explained, understood, or justified

Synonyms: unexplainable, unaccountable, incomprehensible, baffling

Antonyms: explainable, explicable

Tips: Inexplicable is derived from the Latin inexplicabilis, "that which cannot be unfolded or disentangled, very intricate," from in-, "not," with explicabilis, "that which may be explained." Use inexplicable to describe something that is very puzzling and difficult to understand why it happened. It combines both the idea of not understanding or being able to disentangle something, as well as not being able to explain it.

Usage Examples:

I can't tell you why the network crashed; it's inexplicable to me. (unexplainable, unaccountable)

So far, the plane crash is inexplicable and the experts have no idea what happened. (puzzling, unexplainable, incomprehensible)

For some inexplicable reason the client called and cancelled the new project. (puzzling, unexplainable, incomprehensible)

Honestly, I have no idea why she started yelling at me last night; it was totally inexplicable. (unexplainable, incomprehensible)
