Definition: 1. to make somebody feel degraded or humiliated; 2. to behave in a way that lowers your dignity (abase yourself)

Synonyms: demean, shame, belittle, humiliate, disgrace

Antonyms: elevate, exalt, dignify

Tips: Abase is derived from the old French abaissier, "to lower." To be abased is to have your status or image lowered. You can abase someone else and make that person feel lower and humiliated or you can abase yourself and make yourself feel lower or lose your dignity. The noun abasement refers to humiliation or depriving one of self-esteem.

Usage Examples:

The other children's teasing abased the little boy. (belittled, humiliated)

The ambitious coach abased his team whenever they failed to win. (demeaned, belittled)

Sheila realized that her boss's constant criticism was a form of abasement. (humiliation, belittlement) noun

Don't kiss up to the boss that way; you're only abasing yourself. (demeaning, humiliating)
