Definition: 1. easily seen--noticeable; 2. trying to attract attention through being unusual or remarkable

Synonyms: obvious, noticeable, blatant, evident, apparent, obtrusive, overt

Antonyms: inconspicuous, unnoticeable, unseen, hidden

Tips: Conspicuous can mean either "plainly visible" or "trying to get attention by being remarkable." When you are conspicuous, you do not blend in with a group. If you are doing this on purpose, you are trying to garner attention. When someone is conspicuously absent from an important event, it's very obvious that the person isn't there and is missed. Conspicuous behavior is likey nonconformist, since it stands apart from the ordinary.

The tourist's bright backpack was quite conspicuous and immediately marked her as a foreigner. (obvious, noticeable)

If you continue your conspicuous and odd behavior, she will know you are planning a surprise party for her. (obvious, overt)
