Definition: (n.) a person who adheres to expected norms of a group or society; (adj.) 1. marked by conformity or convention; 2. adhering to established rules or customs

Antonyms: (n./adj.) recusant, nonconformist

Tips: Conformist can be a somewhat negative term in a society that values individuality. Although it does mean "to adhere to accepted societal practices," it is also refers to an unquestioning, follower-type mentality. A nonconformist is someone who does not conform to societal standards.

Usage Examples:

People with nonconformist attitudes used to be the only ones to sport tattoos, but these days they are so common that even those with more conservative mentalities sometimes have them. (nontraditional, individualistic) adjective

She is such a conformist that you'll never see her breaking any rules. (follower, conservative) noun
