affectation

Definition: artificial and pretentious behavior, usually meant to impress others

Synonyms: pretense, posturing, pose, artificiality

Antonyms: candor, frankness, naturalness

Tips: When somebody acts in an affected manner, that person is acting unnaturally and pretentiously in order to impress others. This behavior or act is known as affectation.

Usage Examples:

He acted with an affectation of nonchalance, even though he was upset. (pretense, artificiality)

I think Annette would be more popular if she dropped all her little affectations and just acted real. (pretenses, posturings)

His success has made him so affected I'm not sure we'll ever see the real, down-to-earth James again. (pretentious, artificial) adjective

She ordered a glass of expensive champagne with great affectation, and it was obvious she was pretending to be something she's not. (pretense, posturing)
