Tips: Tantamount is derived from the Anglo-French tant amunter, “to amount to as much.” It is often used as a more sophisticated way to say "equal" or "the same as." Note: do not confuse tantamount with paramount. Paramount means "of great importance," while tantamount means "equal to." Tantamount is often used to describe actions that are equivalent to illegal acts: "tantamount to steeling, perjury, embezzling."
