Tips: Surmount is derived from the Old French surmounter, "to rise above, go beyond." Think of the word mount, as in, "mount your horse." Mount means to get on top. Surmount means "to go beyond being on top." If you surmount something, you have prevailed and triumphed over it--you have gone beyond being on top. Surmount is often used to denote achieving success by overcoming difficulties. Think of figuratively climbing over an obstacle and continuing on to achieve success.
