V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

reminiscent

adjective

Definition: 1. having qualities or characteristics that remind us of something or someone, especially from the past; 2. suggesting memories of the past; 3. bringing something to mind

Synonyms: evocative, suggestive, similar, implicative, nostalgic, recollective, redolent

Antonyms: dissimilar

Tips: Reminiscent comes from the Latin reminisci, "to recollect." The related word reminisce is a verb connoting the action of going over things of the past in one's mind. Your reminiscences are the experiences you remember from the past, often in written form. When something is similar to and reminds one of something that happened in the past, reminiscent is a good word to describe its nostalgic traits. Reminiscent is synonymous with redolent. See redolent for additional analysis.

Usage Examples:

Current clothing styles are reminiscent of those popular in the 1960's. (recollective, evocative)

Christie finds it inspirational to reminisce about the time when she participated in the Olympics. (think, remember, recollect) verb

That perfume is reminiscent of the way my mother's room smelled when I was young. (redolent, recollective)

Their wedding made me reminiscent of my own. (nostalgic, redolent)
