realm

noun

Definition: 1. an area of knowledge, interest, or specialty; 2. an area ruled by a king

Synonyms: interest, topic, subject, area, country, domain, zone, province, land, monarchy, kingdom, place

Antonyms:

Tips: A realm is a kingdom or domain. Over time, realm has expanded to also mean "a domain of interest or specialty." Realm can be used as a more sophisticated way of saying "area," which also has a land or space connotation: "This is my area of expertise, or realm of expertise." Also think of realm in terms of authority. Just as a king is limited to overseeing his realm, a judge is also limited to reviewing what is in the realm of the law or the realm of his or her jurisdiction. They do not have authority to rule outside of their realm of authority, so they have to stay within the realm when making decisions or rulings.

Usage Examples:

Her suggestion was completely out of the realm of possibility. (area)

In addition to ecology, she was expected to have knowledge in the realm of biology. (subject, topic)

The play took place in the realm of King Henry VIII. (kingdom, domain)

Art is really my realm of preference, but I enjoy writing as well. (interest, area, subject)
