V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

persevere

verb

Definition: to persist with something regardless of the obstacles, to be persistent

Synonyms: endure, maintain, persist, proceed, continue, remain

Antonyms: quit, stop, discontinue

Tips: Think of the related words persist, "refuse to stop," and severe, "difficult to endure." Persevere means "to refuse to stop no matter what you have to endure." "I will persevere" is a little more sophisticated than saying "I will continue/endure." It has also come to mean "to accomplish the task," though this is not an accurate usage. The noun perseverance refers to the steadfast continuance of something.

Usage Examples:

Although the marathon was long and tough, he knew he would persevere to the end. (continue)

Despite obstacles and setbacks, successful people always persevere. (continue, persist)

The man wasn't sure he would be able to persevere through the tough times of the illness. (endure)

Sometimes, I wish I could quit this seemingly never-ending project, but I know I must persevere. (proceed, continue)
