parity

noun

Definition: 1. equality in position, wage, value, status, or the like; 2. the quality of being alike or similar

Synonyms: balance, closeness, equality, sameness, uniformity, agreement

Antonyms: disparity, inequality, imbalance

Tips: Think of the related word pair, which means "two of something equal or similar." Parity is the equality between two similar things. Parity can be used when describing foreign currency as equal to U.S. currency. It is also used in mathematics to describe the equality between integers and in physics to describe the equality of systems in the universe. The word disparity refers to difference or inequality. Use parity as a more sophisticated way of saying "equality" or "similarity." In another definition, parity can also refer to the number of times a woman has given birth. Don't confuse parity with its homonym parody.

Usage Examples:

The young actress demanded a bigger dressing room, saying that she should have parity with the other actors in the play. (equality)

For better economic stability, the small country would like its currency to maintain parity with the U.S. dollar. (balance)

I've been taking tennis lessons, and I think my game is almost on parity with yours, now. (equality, uniformity)

There is a huge disparity between how hard I work and how little I get paid. (inequality, imbalance)
