V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary
irrevocable
adjective
Definition: impossible to change or revoke
Synonyms: fixed, unalterable, irreversible, certain, changeless, constant, final, indelible
Antonyms: revocable, reversible, changeable, alterable
Tips: Think of the root word revoke, which means "to recall, withdraw, or reverse." The prefix ir- makes the root word its opposite. Therefore, irrevocable describes something that cannot be withdrawn or reversed. Once it's done it's done and can not be changed or taken back--it is now irrevocable.
Usage Examples:
The politician tried to retract his negative statements, but the damage they had already done was irrevocable. (irreversible)
After a grueling semester as a chemistry major, he was happy to find out that declaring a major is not an irrevocable decision. (changeless, fixed)
My fate was irrevocable and I prepared for what would come. (fixed, indelible, certain)
Although she regretted selling her house, her decision was irrevocable, and she had to move. (final, irreversible)
