V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

indifferent

adjective

Definition: 1. having little or no interest; 2. neither good nor bad; 3. not mattering one way or another; 3. showing little care or concern

Synonyms: disinterested, detached, aloof, apathetic, unconcerned, unmoved, uninvolved, unremarkable, ordinary, undistinguished

Antonyms: interested, attached, concerned, involved, outstanding

Tips: The related noun difference means "a change which has an effect." Something indifferent makes no difference either way. Indifferent can also be used to describe something that is fair or average, but not great. Indifferent is synonymous with apathetic. Apathetic describes being indifferent and unenergetic about a decision, while indifferent is simply not caring about the outcome: "I'm indifferent--it doesn't make a difference to me."

Usage Examples:

Reactions to the movie ranged from good to indifferent. (unremarkable, apathetic)

He loved going to the company picnic every year, but his wife was indifferent about it. (detached, disinterested)

When it comes to politics I am indifferent and don't really care who wins. (disinterested, unconcerned)

His father thinks he'll be a great actor some day, but I think his acting is rather indifferent. (unremarkable, undistinguished)
