V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary
humility
noun
Definition: the quality of being humble that comes from a lack of pride and a lowly opinion of oneself--modesty
Synonyms: modesty, deference, respectfulness, humbleness, self-abasement
Antonyms: hubris, pride, arrogance
Tips: There is some debate over whether humility (modesty that comes from lack of pride) is in fact a virtue. In Christianity, humility is seen as such. Some other schools of thought, however, do not agree. One example is objectivism. Objectivism teaches people to pursue their strengths and not to be ashamed of success. This tension may be seen between the two related words humble and humiliation.
Usage Examples:
He bowed to his guests in a sign of humility. (respectfulness)
It wouldn't hurt the young man to show a little humility when with his clients. (modesty)
