V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

fervor

noun

Definition: 1. extreme intensity of emotion or belief; 2. intense heat

Synonyms: seriousness, passion, ardency, earnestness, animation, vehemence, intensity

Antonyms: apathy, impassiveness, indifference

Tips: Fervor is derived from the Latin fervidus, from fervere, “to boil.” The term "religious fervor" is a common usage. Fervor is related to fervid, except fervor is an actual state of being fervid and fervent. Fervor is the state of being worked up into an emotional boil, or a glowing ardor. Crowds can erupt into a fervor. Think, "fevered state of passionate zeal." If you are fervent (passionate) about something, you will have fervor (passion) for it. For a memory trick, note how fervor sounds like "fever." A fever is when your body gets hot. Now, if you have fervor (passion) for something, it will most likely increase your body temperature and potentially give you a fever. Fervor has that connotation of heat and should be used to describe heated passion and intensity.

Usage Examples:

The country was full of patriotic fervor during the war. (zeal, passion)

Rioters reached quite a fervor after embarking upon a hunger strike. (earnestness, vehemence)

I took on the challenge with the same fervor and passion that I do every task. (zeal, earnestness)

His fervor for life is what kept him alive with cancer far longer than doctors ever expected. (passion, zeal, intensity)
