V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary
erratic
adjective
Definition: unpredictable, irregular, or inconsistent, especially in being likely to depart from what is considered standard or expected
Synonyms: irregular, unpredictable, inconsistent, variable, errant, misplaced
Antonyms: steady, consistent
Tips: Erratic is derived from the Latin errare, “to wander." Errant and error are also derived from the same Latin word. Think of someone wandering aimlessly and constantly changing direction without a determined destination; that person would be erratic. You may hear someone say that you are an erratic driver, or you are driving erratically. This would be a correct use of the word if the driver was constantly changing speeds or lanes, or was hitting the breaks without any predictability. In geology, erratic can refer to a rock or boulder that was moved from one place to another by a glacier. Erratic speech or behavior has no predictability or consistent rhythm.
Usage Examples:
The dog's erratic behavior means he may be more likely to bite. (unpredictable)
He drives erratically; he constantly changes lanes, increases and decreases his speed, and slams on his breaks without cause or warning. (misplaced, irregular, unpredictable) adverb
The boy's erratic speech patterns made me feel something was amiss. (irregular, unpredictable)
His erratic work and travel schedule makes it difficult for him to form meaningful relationships. (irregular, unpredictable, variable)
