Definition: 1. a set of facts and circumstances pertaining to a situation or event; 2. the linguistic sense of a word that helps explain its meaning--the words before and after the word in question

Tips: When you put something in context, you essentially explain the full circumstances surrounding it. This can be true of an event or situation as well as of a word. When you don't understand the meaning of a word, you can sometimes figure it out from its context--how it's used in a sentence. Contextual clues provide information as to the meaning of a word or circumstance.

Usage Examples:

I know you think that my comments were meant to be critical, but you heard them out of context, and you don’t know the full story behind what I said. (circumstance, setting)

It’s important to use vocabulary words in the proper context, because a word’s usage doesn’t always correspond to its literal meaning. (setting)

You can often guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word by looking at its context. (words before and after)

The historical context of that event explains a lot about how such an event could happen. (timing, setting, circumstance)
