V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary
consent
noun, verb
Definition: (n.) 1. permission to do something; 2. agreement on an opinion or action; 3. an affirmative reply; (v.) to allow
Synonyms: (n.) approval, authorization, concession, blessing, permission, (v.) agree, permit, approve, assent, acquiesce
Antonyms: (n.) dissent, refusal, veto, (v.) disapprove, deny, refuse
Tips: Consent is derived from the Latin consentire, “to feel with, to feel the same.” Think, to agree with and approve of someone who agrees with you and feels the same as you. If a Father gives his consent to marry his daughter, he does so because he believes the person cares the same or feels the same about his daughter. Consent (when used as a term in court) is a plea used when the defense states that the victim gave her consent, therefore no crime was committed. Consent is official permission. Consent is the opposite of dissent.
Usage Examples:
Is permission really consent, when given while under the influence of drugs? (authorization, permission)
When Jenny's boyfriend asked her father for his consent to their marriage, her father immediately approved. (blessing, approval)
I give my consent to this plan. (authorization, blessing)
Did you consent to this crazy idea? (agree)
