V2 Vocabulary Building Dictionary

askance

adverb

Definition: 1. done with a sideways glance; 2. with suspicion or disapproval

Synonyms: sideways, indirectly, skeptically, suspiciously, doubtfully, dubiously

Antonyms: directly, approvingly

Tips: Askance is similar to askew, to be "slightly off center or balance." Askance is almost always preceded by a form of the verb "to look." Askance describes tilting your head, especially when done in a suspicious or disapproving way. Consider this: It's human nature to tilt your head--to look askance--if you are suspicious or disapproving of someone.

Usage Examples:

Everyone looked at John askance when he entered the boardroom wearing shorts and sandals. (suspiciously, with a sideways glance)

He looked at me askance, as though he thought I was hiding something. (skeptically, suspiciously)

The seniors looked askance at the freshmen who tried to join in their circle. (sideways, suspiciously)

When John's wife told his boss that he was the perfect husband, he looked at her askance, nearly ruining her attempt to make him look good. (sideways, dubiously)
