Definition: marked by moderation and temperance in indulgence (especially with food and drink)

Synonyms: abstentious, temperate, moderate, self-denying, restrained, disciplined, abstinent

Antonyms: voracious, epicurean, licentious, gluttonous

Tips: An abstemious person is one who "abstains" (notice the similarity in the word root) from "excesses in food, drink and other desires." Abstemious originates from the Latin abs, "away from" and temetum, "intoxicating liquor." Think, staying away from liquor or any potentially harmful indulgence.
